Chapel Place
This pedestrianised street links the bottom of Mount Sion and the end of the High Street with the bottom of Frant Road, from which the Pantiles can be accessed. The street was mentioned in the town development map of 1867. It is believed that its name may derive from the Baptist Chapel erected in 1851. William Smith who had been pastor of the chapel for 26 years, published his memoirs in 1905.
During WWI, more than seventy Belgian refugee children were evacuated to Tunbridge Wells. King Charles the Martyr School for Boys was one of the schools that gave the youngsters free education. Click here for information about the school. Click the report button for survey details.
