Sussex Mews and Linden Park Road
The Mews is shown as a separate street from at least the 19th Century, contained stables and a coach house serving properties in the Pantiles and surrounding area. In 1984 Speyhawk Land and Estate was granted permission for reconstruction of these buildings to workshops and studios, The mews, now a pedestrian precinct, runs behind the Pantiles Lower Walk from Linden Park Road at one end to Neville Street and Frant Road at the other. The name may derive from the fact that this part of town is close to the county boundary with East Sussex, and much of the land was owned by Sussex based landowners. A planning application for the area to become a mini market has been approved.
The Sussex Arms claims to be one of the oldest pubs in Tunbridge Wells. The Grove Bowling Club website includes the following information Who is this famous bowler and ‘Brewer of Good Ale’ from 1714? Dick Pottinger who was Mine Host of the old Coaching Hostelry the ‘Sussex Shades’. was a famous bowler in his day, and a ‘Brewer of Good Ale.’ Old guide books contain many references to him and he did much to foster the game in Kent and Sussex, including challenge matches for live pigs!
